“Newsmakers” Features Tennessee Teacher of the Year
Allyson Chick

On Thursday, November 22 at 9:30 p.m., WKNO-TV will premiere a new edition of Newsmakers on Channel 10 featuring a conversation with second and third grade teacher Allyson Chick of Memphis City Schools (MCS). Allyson was recently named Tennessee Teacher of the Year by the Tennessee Department of Education.

Eric Barnes, publisher of the Memphis Daily News and host of WKNO’s weekly series Behind the Headlines, will host the half-hour interview with Chick, focusing on her passion for teaching and why she feels she was selected for this honor.

Allyson, who has been with MCS since 2001, teaches at Richland Elementary School and is involved in providing input for the Teacher Effectiveness Initiative, an effort to ensure that an effective teacher stands in front of every classroom in Memphis.  Tennessee’s Teacher of the Year is also a candidate for the National Teacher of the Year award.  If she wins, she has been promised a Skype meeting with President Barak Obama and her students.

“Education is, and will continue to be, a hot-button topic in Memphis,” said Dena Owens, Communications Manager for MCS. “The Teacher of the Year honor confirms that the hard work of Allyson and her fellow teachers in the classroom has extraordinary value.  While new challenges abound for teachers everywhere, Allyson is proof that the district’s work to deliver effective teachers who are ready and able to tackle them is working.”

“The public school system in Tennessee has been at the forefront of many conversations” said Michael J. LaBonia, WKNO President and CEO. “It is an important issue affecting everyone, and the community needs to be informed. As one of the main missions of public television, we are proud that WKNO is able to offer programs that inform a more educated citizenry. And we are proud to be able to salute our community members, like Ms. Chick, who are dedicated to improving education in the Mid-South.”

The broadcast of Newsmakers: Tennessee Teacher of the Year Allyson Chick is sponsored by Fogelman Properties and Memphis Rotary Club.
