WKNO SALUTES ACTION AUCTION VOLUNTEER JACK MARKS

April is National Volunteer Month, and WKNO is celebrating by saluting its Action Auction volunteers. Jack Marks, who works year-round with Sally Stover, WKNO's volunteer coordinator, is one of WKNO’s most valued volunteers.

Jack began volunteering at WKNO in 2002.  He had been working post-retirement at an office supply firm, after a career in the newspaper business and with IBM, and when that small company folded, he was looking for a new way to spend his day.  He and his wife Faye, members of the congregation of Temple Israel, had long been fans of WKNO, and he has become a valuable member of the team that keeps WKNO's fundraising events running smoothly.

WKNO’s annual Action Auction airs live on April 18, 19, 25, & 26, with over 600 items donated by local businesses.  Select items are currently available for online bidding with final bids being taken online and on-air simultaneously. Information on all of the items is available at www.wkno.org. The Action Auction raises money to support WKNO’s many valuable programs and events.

While Jack volunteers year-round, he puts in longer hours during the two weeks of Action Auction, giving up his weekends. “It doesn't conflict with basketball, and the food is always good," Jack says about the Action Auction.  But there is a more important reason why Jack Marks spends his afternoons volunteering for WKNO.  "It gives the whole community a chance to enrich itself.  Not much else on the TV or radio does."

Jack listens to All Things Considered on WKNO-FM every afternoon, and he and his wife reserve their Sunday nights for WKNO's broadcast of Masterpiece. Jack Marks and many of WKNO’s valued volunteers can be seen live on the Action Auction on Saturday-Sunday, April 18-19 and 25-26 from 2 p.m. to 11 p.m. on WKNO/Channel 10.

WKNO is a non-profit, private foundation serving the Mid-South for over 50 years. An important community resource, WKNO uses the power of non-commercial public broadcasting to provide the Mid-South with quality educational and cultural programs that inform, entertain, and inspire.
