WKNO SALUTES DONATING ARTIST HELEN STAHL
Noted artist Helen Stahl has been a long-time WKNO art donor. This year is no different. Helen’s untitled embellished print with watercolor is among the many that will be auctioned off during the premier Art of Fine Living, A WKNO Auction.
The 79-year-old artist, whose studio is in Hornsby, Tennessee, has been an artist since she was 18 years old and helping create floats for the Cotton Carnival, working for $1 an hour while still in high school at South Side. After graduating in 1947, she went to Memphis State University and majored in industrial arts. Because the university did not have an art program, she also studied fine arts at Memphis Academy of Arts, where she studied under the acclaimed Memphis artist Burton Callicott. She later taught art for 30 years at Treadwell High School.
Helen has been donating art to WKNO for 15 or 20 years. “I donate to WKNO because of the people there,” she said, “and because I like Channel 10. My mother particularly liked it. She loved watching Lawrence Welk and the cooking programs. I didn’t know it was rubbing off on me.”
Helen is not only involved in The Art of Fine Living Auction; she is also an avid viewer and supporter, her favorite programs being the historical programs, such as documentaries on Frank Lloyd Wright and the recent film series The National Parks: America’s Best Idea.
Helen’s work, as well as the work of other well-known Memphis artists, can be bid on by going to the auction website at wkno.org. Bidding on auction items will close online and on-air simultaneously during the live broadcast of The Art of Fine Living, A WKNO Auction Saturday-Sunday November 7-8 from 1:00 to 11:00 p.m.
The art up for auction can be viewed anytime online at wkno.org or at the new WKNO Digital Media Center, which is open for previewing Monday – Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. The WKNO Digital Media Center is located in Cordova at 7151 Cherry Farms Road.
