CORDOVA RESIDENTS TO APPEAR IN DOCUMENTARY ON WKNO
Like most American teenage girls, sixteen-year-old Olivia Boelter loves wearing the current popular fashions. But, don’t be surprised if you see her poring over the pages of the Godey’s Ladies Book, the popular fashion magazine from the year 1869.
You see, Olivia, a homeschooled student, and her mother/teacher, Jamie Boelter, both have a love for history. But in addition to their regular classroom curriculum, the Boelters always enjoy supplementing their book studies with other opportunities that allow them to learn even more about the customs and lifestyles of people who lived in times past.
That’s why, a few months ago, an article in The Commercial Appeal caught Jamie’s eye. The article stated that local filmmaker Willy Bearden (Overton Park – A Century of Change, Elmwood Cemetery – Reflections of Memphis) was working on a new documentary about the history of Victorian Village, entitled The View From Adams Avenue. A light bulb came on. Jamie contacted Willy immediately and asked if he could use some extras in the documentary. Willy loved the thought and scheduled Jamie, Olivia and several of their history-loving friends as Civil War-era portrayers in a shoot at the Mallory Neely House.
This was a most exciting opportunity for the Boelters – the chance to experience history in an entirely new way – by actually becoming part of it in a genuine setting. And for Willy – a dramatic reenactment was a perfect piece for his new project.
You can watch the Boelters and their friends in their finest 19th century apparel and learn about the history of Memphis’s first suburb in The View from Adams Avenue: 19th Century Memphis, premiering Monday, August 4 at 7:00 p.m. on WKNO/Channel 10.
The View from Adams Avenue is a production of The Victorian Village Inc. Community Development Corporation with funding provided by the Albert J. Martin Foundation, the Assisi Foundation, the Daisy Mallory Heirs, the Legacy Project, and the State of Tennessee.
