Story of Memphis City Beautiful
In 1929, Memphis Mayor E.H. Crump vowed to begin making his city more beautiful, cleaner, quieter, and more livable. He enlisted the help of women to make this a reality. For over ninety years, the Memphis City Beautiful Commission has been the energy behind blight abatement, beautification projects, and community engagement. The Story of Memphis City Beautiful uses film footage from the 1940s, 50s, and 60s, to highlight the first organized beautification program in the United States. Since its inception, Memphis City Beautiful has paved the way for great ideas from the nation's first environmental court to Plant the Town Red, to the Trashion Show. The film features Memphis historians, Wayne Dowdy, Gina Cordell, and Jimmy Ogle, City Beautiful executive director, Eldra White, landscape architect Ritchie Smith, Judge Larry Potter, and community activists from all parts of the city. The history of Memphis City Beautiful is a rich story that includes some of the best ideas from some of the most inventive and forward-thinking individuals in the city's history.
