TENNESSEE CAPITOL REPORT airs as a 30-minute show on Tennessee's Public Television stations this Sunday. Shot on location at the State Capitol in Nashville, the show offers in-depth interviews and behind-the-scenes video covering Tennessee's Legislature.
This weekend, airing on Sunday morning, March 31st, on Republican plans to create alternatives for failing public schools and other issues. Guests include:The program will also offer a short documentary story on the continued controversy surrounding the bust of Nathan Bedford Forrest at the State Capitol."School voucher ideas have been around the General Assembly for awhile now, but legislation has failed in the House the past two years because rural legislators have feared the impact on public schools," said producer Tim Weeks. "This year Gov. Lee has provided a new twist as Education Savings Accounts, with the momentum that could very well help passage, furthering the privatization of education in Tennessee."Produced to offer Tennesseans insight into the issues and personalities guiding the General Assembly, TENNESSEE CAPITOL REPORT is hosted by TV and radio personality Chip Hoback and produced by award-winning producer Tim Weeks of TWAPictures in Nashville for the Tennessee Public Television Council, representing six PBS affiliates across the state.
- Rep. Susan Lynn (R-Mt. Juliet), House Finance Ways & Means Chair, the first woman to hold this powerful position, provides an overview of the budget as it begins the 5-week process of committee hearings.
- Sen. Jack Johnson (R-Franklin), Senate Majority Leader, and Rep. Bill Dunn (R-Knoxville), House Speaker Pro Tempore, discuss Gov. Lee's proposed legislation for Education Savings Accounts (ESAs) and a Charter School Commission.
- Sen. Mike Bell (R-Riceville), Senate Judiciary Chair, discusses judicial reform and the subpoena powers of Community Oversight Boards.
- Rep. Bo Mitchell (D-Nashville), provides the Democratic response to many of these issues.
